Reclaim Your Life from Peripheral Neuropathy

If you’re struggling with burning, tingling, numbness, or pain in your feet or hands, you don’t have to accept this as your new normal. At New Dawn Acupuncture, I help patients with peripheral neuropathy slow, stop, and often reverse the progression of their symptoms using a powerful combination of acupuncture, electrical stimulation, and low-level infrared laser therapy.

By improving circulation, restoring nerve function, and supporting the body’s natural healing process, many patients regain sensation, balance, and confidence in daily life. Every treatment plan is personalized to meet your unique needs and restore your quality of life.

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that causes a gradual loss of sensation—usually beginning in the feet or hands. It happens when nerves (and the protective myelin sheath surrounding them) begin to deteriorate due to poor circulation, cutting off their oxygen and nutrient supply.

Common Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy

  • Pain from light touch (hypersensitivity)
  • Tingling or “pins and needles” feeling
  • Burning or stabbing sensations
  • Numbness in feet or hands
  • Wooden or heavy feeling in limbs
  • Sensation of walking on foreign objects (like rocks)
  • Trouble with balance or coordination
  • Loss of ability to feel temperature or texture
Early Warning Signs of Peripheral Neuropathy

Typically, the progression to peripheral neuropathy starts with extreme pain when the foot is touched. Such pain is out of proportion to the level of contact: it could just be a slight brush against the toes that sends someone into orbit.

This extreme pain shows that the myelin sheath surrounding the nerve has degraded and the nerve is now exposed. Some people will wear two pairs of socks or shoes that are a size too big to shield their feet.

As It Progresses: Changing Sensations

As nerve damage worsens, the symptoms evolve. Sensations become confusing and distorted. Common descriptions include:

  • Feeling like toes or fingers are “wooden”
  • Walking on pebbles or a balled-up sock
  • Numb patches or dull sensations, like wearing socks or gloves all the time

At this stage, the nerves are dying, and the brain starts receiving mixed or weak signals.

Eventually, people experience the classic “pins and needles” sensation—either constantly or intermittently—indicating severe nerve impairment.

Advanced Stages: Numbness and Loss of Control

Once full numbness sets in, nerves are completely dead and no longer communicate with the brain.

While the pain may stop, this stage introduces serious risks:

  • Poor balance and falls
  • Inability to feel the gas or brake pedals while driving
  • Greater reliance on mobility aids like canes, walkers, or eventually, wheelchairs

As mobility declines, daily activities become harder. This often leads to:

  • Avoiding social gatherings
  • Skipping shopping trips or vacations
  • A shrinking world and increased isolation
  • Depression and loss of self-esteem due to declining independence

Western medicine’s response

When peripheral neuropathy sufferers seek help, they get only one answer from Western medicine – drugs. Usually, the first medication prescribed is Gabapentin, with doses increasing as the nerves continue to die. When gabapentin stops working well, additional drugs like Cymbalta and Lyrica are prescribed. These drugs help with the discomfort; however, they do not address the cause of the neuropathy. More drugs will be needed, but they are merely masking the symptoms.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please do not ignore them.

Peripheral neuropathy will get worse.

Early intervention with acupuncture is the key to slowing or stopping the progression and shortens the treatment time.

Acupuncture has been proven to work for peripheral neuropathy

N

Acupuncture increases blood flow to extremities by triggering the body’s immune system. It also increases the endorphins in the feet and hands, which helps with the sensations people experience.

N

Acupuncture can be enhanced with electrical stimulation to amplify the effect of the needles, which in turn speeds the body’s healing process.

N

“Cold” lasers force infrared light into the cells, providing additional energy for cells to heal themselves. As tissues (both the nerves and the myelin sheath) regenerate, feeling is restored in the feet or hands.

Acupuncture, electrical stimulation, and infrared light will slow or stop the progression of peripheral neuropathy, regardless of the cause, and in most cases will reverse it.

No two people are alike, and the outcomes can differ.

However, as treatments progress most people find they are more stable while standing and walking. As feeling returns to their feet or hands they see a reversal of symptoms.

Maintaining the progress and building on it takes time but the results allow people to live again.

Getting Started

A treatment plan is developed during our initial consultation. We first conduct tests to determine the level of sensory loss. Test results along with details about neuropathy symptoms, health history, age, and lifestyle determine the number of treatments that will be needed to restore optimal feeling.

Peripheral neuropathy does not have to be a crippling, lifelong condition made tolerable only with more and more drugs. You can reclaim the feeling in your hands or feet, as well as your independence.

Come in to learn how much better your life can be again.
